Welcome
to another special BONUS episode of Saturday Cappuccino with the Saints and our
continuing series – Why Christianity is true. And this week, we
are continuing our discussion of the evidence for Jesus Christ with a focus on
the hostile witnesses to Christianity.
Across the ancient world, the enemies
of Christianity left behind testimony they never intended to give. In this
special episode we explore hostile witnesses — Roman senators, imperial
historians, pagan satirists, Syrian philosophers, and even distant Chinese
chroniclers — whose writings unexpectedly confirm the historical truth of Jesus
of Nazareth.
We examine the records of Tacitus,
Suetonius, Pliny the Younger, Lucian of Samosata, Mara bar Serapion, Thallus,
Phlegon, and others. These men did not believe in Jesus. They did not defend
Christianity. Yet their words preserve independent confirmation of His life,
His crucifixion under Pontius Pilate, the explosive growth of His movement, and
even the strange cosmic signs reported at His death — the midday darkness and
the earthquake.
We also explore the Nazareth
Inscription, Claudius’s decree on grave tampering, the Alexamenos Graffito, and
newly uncovered geological evidence from the Dead Sea that aligns with the
Gospel account of the Crucifixion Quake.
These voices — skeptical, hostile, and
often contemptuous — form one of the most powerful bodies of external evidence
for the historical Jesus.
