SAINT CHRISTOPHER: From Dog Headed Giant to the Martyr who Carried the Christ Child

Episode #53

Welcome to another episode of Saturday Cappuccino with the Saints. And this week, we are going to focus on a beloved, incredibly popular, but extremely mysterious and legendary figure – Saint Christopher.

Millions of people around the world carry or wear Saint Christopher Medals when they are traveling.  Some hang them from their rear-view mirrors in their car or wear them on chains around their necks.  And most, I would bet, have almost no idea who the actual Saint is that is behind all of these traditions.  Well…, this week we are going to find out because we are going to explore the story of the real martyr behind the legend - Saint Christopher.  We will show the violent Roman Empire that shaped his life and the legends that transformed him into a giant who carried Christ.

And on the way, it is going to get quite strange on this journey as we also will discuss the mysterious dog‑headed iconography of the East.  What is that all about?  And of course, we will examine how the global devotion expressed through the Saint Christopher Medal got started in the first place.

Drawing from historical sources, early martyrologies, medieval literature, and modern scholarship, we will reveal how Christopher became one of Christianity’s most enduring patrons — the protector of travelers and the man who carried the Christ Child, the Christophoros, literally “Christ Bearer”.  It promises to be a fascinating episode.

You won’t want to miss it!
